What a Manual Rebuild Involves

Manual transmissions wear differently than automatics. The gears and shafts usually survive — it’s the synchros and bearings that wear out, so a rebuild typically covers bearings, gaskets, seals and synchros. Everything still goes through our parts wash and inspection, and if a gear is damaged we replace it while we’re in there. And no, there’s no torque converter in a manual — the clutch does that job.

Hard to Get Into Gear? It May Not Be the Transmission

When it’s hard to get into gear with the pedal down, the cause is often the clutch hydraulics — the master cylinder at the pedal or the slave cylinder at the transmission — or the pressure plate not releasing, rather than the gearbox itself.
